Performance Artist ~ Alison Knowles

Alison Knowles

Alison Knowles is an American artist who produces work in a number mediums. She is very active in the Fluxus movement, and continues to create work inspired by her Fluxus experience.  Her work incorporates performance, radio and sound, print making, and paper making.  Alison Knowles inspires me because in all of her art pieces there is music playing and she conveys her work and idea of art in a very light hearted manner.  My initial thought on a performance piece is to involve music somehow because is very powerful and dictate a mood and have a very deep impact depending on its presence.

One of her greatest performances is “Making a Salad”.  Her first performance of this piece was in New York City in 1962.   Alison Knowles along with her daughter and a few friends or just random volunteers chop up lettuce and vegetables to create a giant salad served in giant bowls serenaded by live music the whole time.  I really felt inspired by her playful idea of performance art.
